What happens when the author of the book you’re studying joins the conversation?
Our Spanish 12 students found out when Spanish teacher and Puerto Rican writer Ms. María Mercedes Benito stepped into a different role: guest speaker. The subject was one of her favorites, her award-winning first novel, Usted es suya, set in late 19th-century Puerto Rico.
Having read the novel as part of their curriculum, our seniors took their questions straight to the source during a coloquio led by Spanish Chair Ms. Vanessa Ortiz, exploring the story, its historical context, and the choices behind the writing with the author.

Saint John’s School
Saint John’s School is a non-profit, college preparatory, nonsectarian, coeducational day school founded in 1915. The school, located in a residential area of Condado, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has an enrollment of over 800 students from Toddler to grade twelve.
