Elementary School Counselor

Job Description
  • Meet with teams for ABCDE needs (child studies) using PBIS. Participate in collaborative grade level meetings to assist in the analysis and utilization of behavioral assessment data to improve students’ social emotional learning.
  • Use the standard reporting system. Compile student behavior data for review and understanding of trends.
  • Conduct student observations. Create behavioral modification plans and submit through Teams notebook and monitor progress. Submit referrals and progress reports.
  • Coordinate and meet with external therapists, and teachers, document recommendations, behavior modification programs, and provide follow-through.
  • Provide parent consultations.
  • Provide student counseling, facilitate group mediation, and crisis intervention.
  • Teach specific check-out lessons using predetermined lessons PPK-6th.
  • Teach the 6th grade Life Skills course.
  • Facilitate small focus groups: predetermined and dependent on needs (data).
  • Perform class interventions. Join and facilitate class meetings.
  • Perform individual and group interventions using Restorative Practices and student mediation.
  • Support all SEL initiatives/activities.
  • Supervise snack, lunch, break/transition, drop off and dismissal periods as needed.

Education, Skills & Experience
At least three (3) years’ work experience in child/youth development, counseling, or school psychology, and education. SEL training, knowledge of PBIS, Restorative Practices protocols. Master’s degree required.
  • High level of personal organization, planning and flexibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Well-spoken in English and Spanish.
  • Proven ability to proactively lead by example, effectively, and confidently work with parents.
  • Team player: maturity, humility, strong work ethic, follow-through, growth mindset, willingness to respond positively to feedback, and a “roll-up-my-sleeves” attitude.
  • Enjoys and has experience teaching young children.
  • Is adept in data collection, analysis, and documenting.

Saint John’s School is a non-profit, college preparatory, nonsectarian, coeducational day school founded in 1915. The school, located in a residential area of Condado, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has an enrollment of over 800 students from pre pre-kinder to grade twelve. Instruction is mostly in English with the exception of language courses.
