Grand Prize at PR Metropolitan Science Fair!

We are incredibly proud to announce that Jerry Chen '24 won the Grand Prize at the Puerto Rico Metropolitan Science Fair on MAR 10! Not only that, but he's also earned a coveted spot as one of Puerto Rico's representatives at the prestigious International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in California this May!
Only the top 1,800 finalists from around the globe are invited to compete at ISEF, making this achievement genuinely remarkable!

Jerry's groundbreaking research project, "Unveiling New Horizons in 2D Materials: Computational Discovery of a Metallic Boron Nitride Monolayer," showcases his exceptional talent and dedication to pushing the boundaries of science. He theoretically discovered the first metallic BN monolayer by integrating advanced quantum chemical computations with in-depth and critical chemical analysis. This new 2D BN material has a unique geometric structure and holds high promise for experimental synthesis.

Jerry's journey began in the summer of 2022 after taking a National Science Foundation-funded program and a high school enrichment program. Working alongside graduate students from the University of Puerto Rico, he did computations from small molecular models. Then, he expanded his work to infinite monolayers, culminating in a discovery that was previously unachieved material. He summarized his research findings in a compelling poster at the Puerto Rico Metropolitan Science Fair on February 28, garnering praise from experienced judges.

This year, only nine projects with the highest accumulation of points were selected as finalists to represent Puerto Rico at ISEF. In addition, Jerry also won first place in the chemistry category and received the Achievement Award from the United States Air Force.

BRAVO, Jerry!!
