Proudly Presenting our 22nd U.S. Presidential Scholar

We are thrilled that the U.S. Department of Education has revealed among the recipients of the prestigious Class of 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars program our high school senior, Alia Marrero-Alattar ('23), as the 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholar for Puerto Rico.

Alongside Alia, 160 exceptional high school seniors have been acknowledged by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars for their outstanding accomplishments in academics, arts, career, and technical education. They include one young woman and one young man from every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. families living abroad, 15 at-large recipients, 20 scholars in the arts, and 20 scholars in career and technical education. Notably, our school has proudly produced 22 U.S. Presidential Scholars since 1968.
 
Reflecting on this achievement, Alia remarked, "I am beyond honored and very grateful for this opportunity. I have loved being able to do what I do. It's amazing to see the result of all my hard work, sacrifice, and my passion. I want to thank my family, my friends, my teachers, all of the school staff, and my community for always supporting me and loving me. I am so happy and proud to represent Puerto Rico, my home forever."
 
Alia recognized Patricia Del Toro as her most influential teacher. "I've had the pleasure of taking classes taught by Ms. Del Toro since 10th grade in AP European History and AP US Government. Her classes were about recognizing the patterns and motivations behind historical events and relating the lessons to our own reality. She showed us how to look at our own communities analytically, something I will always take with me. She inspires me to continue pursuing a path in social studies and to always stay true to my beliefs."
 
Dr. María M. Meléndez, our Interim Head of School, expressed her admiration, stating, "Alia is a spectacular human being and an extraordinary student! We at Saint John's School are tremendously proud of her and deeply grateful for having her as a part of our school community for the past 12 years."

Saint John’s School is a non-profit, college preparatory, nonsectarian, coeducational day school founded in 1915. The school, located in a residential area of Condado, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has an enrollment of over 800 students from pre pre-kinder to grade twelve. Instruction is mostly in English with the exception of language courses.
