The Secondary School provides a challenging, world-class academic curriculum, delivered within a program that seeks to address the social and emotional needs of the students. Personal responsibility of one’s own learning is stressed at all levels. Every student takes the core academic classes of English, math and social studies, science and Spanish. Physical education classes for grades seven through nine meet on a daily basis. In addition, all students in grades seven and eight take a number of exploratory classes that include visual and performing arts, technology, robotics, writing workshop, and research. Algebra I is offered to all eighth graders.

For grades nine through twelve, students follow a college preparatory curriculum enriched by electives and advanced placement courses. Advanced placement courses are usually offered in English literature, Spanish literature, French language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus AB & BC, Economics (Micro and Macro), Psychology, United States History, Comparative Government and Politics, European history and Studio Art. Electives courses usually offered include Anatomy and Physiology, Astronomy, Environmental Science, Art, French, Chinese, Hispanic culture, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Statistics, Introduction to Economics and Journalism.

Graduation Requirements

  • All students must take the prescribed courses in English, Social Studies, Math, and Spanish every year in grades seventh – twelfth.  
  • In Science, all students must take a science course every year they are enrolled in Saint John’s.  There are prescribed courses in science for grades seventh - eleventh.   In twelfth grade all students must take an elective in science. 
  • Students in grades seventh, eighth and ninth are also required to take Physical Education, which includes a Health and Character Education component. 
  • In addition, all ninth grade students have the option of one (1) elective credit.  Students in grades tenth through twelfth have the option of two (2) elective credits per year.
*22 credits - minimum 5 courses per semester (grades 9 -12)

Saint John’s School is a non-profit, college preparatory, nonsectarian, coeducational day school founded in 1915.  The school, located in a residential area of Condado, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has an enrollment of over 800 students from pre pre-kinder to grade twelve. Instruction is mostly in English with the exception of language courses.
