3rd Grade

In the third grade, students focus on comprehensive development in key academic areas. In the realm of reading, the emphasis is on fostering fluency and comprehension skills, engaging in discussions about stories, and honing the ability to identify main ideas and details. Additionally, students work on expanding their vocabulary and exploring various genres of literature. In writing, the curriculum aims to enhance skills such as sentence structure and grammar, guiding students toward writing paragraphs and short essays. Logical organization of ideas becomes a key focus, while narrative, descriptive, and expository writing skills are developed. In mathematics, third graders tackle crucial concepts such as mastering multiplication and division, applying basic fractions, achieving proficiency in addition and subtraction involving more significant numbers, and gaining an introduction to fundamental ideas in geometry, measurement, and data analysis. This multifaceted approach ensures a well-rounded foundation in core subjects for third-grade students. Introducing basic concepts of geometry, measurement, and data analysis.
  • Language Arts 3

Third-grade Language Arts introduces students to the power of literacy through a rich exploration of literature and informational texts. The year begins with an investigation into how people around the world overcome learning challenges, fostering an appreciation for reading and its transformative impact. As students develop their literacy skills, they engage in reading, writing, listening, and speaking to build and share deep knowledge. They explore poetry and pourquoi tales, focusing on different types of frogs, and generate “why” questions that inspire their own creative pourquoi narratives. Later in the year, students delve into literary classics through a case study of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, analyzing its themes, characters, and lasting significance. These engaging modules strengthen reading comprehension, writing abilities, and critical thinking skills, encouraging a lifelong love of storytelling and literacy.
  • Mathematics 3

This third-grade math course provides a comprehensive and engaging approach to fundamental math concepts, focusing on multiplication, division, fractions, measurement,

geometry, and problem-solving strategies. Students begin by learning multiplication and division using equal groups, number lines, and arrays, gradually building fluency with multiplication and division facts. They explore strategies such as the distributive property and patterns in the multiplication table. The course also introduces fractions, helping students understand unit fractions, equivalent fractions, and fraction comparison using number lines. Measurement topics cover time, liquid volume, mass, and perimeter and area, providing real-world applications. Geometry lessons focus on classifying and drawing quadrilaterals, while data representation is introduced through picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. With performance tasks, interactive games, and cumulative practice, students develop problem-solving skills and mathematical fluency in an engaging and structured way

  • Science 3

In third grade science, students will explore the physical and living world through a variety of engaging activities that promote curiosity, observation, and critical thinking. Throughout the year, they will take on the role of different types of scientists as they investigate concepts using hands-on experiments, research projects, and collaborative discussions. The scientific method will serve as a foundation for their learning, helping them develop essential problem-solving skills by asking questions, forming hypotheses, conducting experiments, and analyzing results. Students will also dive into the study of inheritance and traits, where they will examine how characteristics are passed down from one generation to another through interactive projects, such as surveying their own inherited traits and comparing them with classmates. In the weather and climate unit, they will track and compare weather patterns, learning about the factors that influence climate differences across regions. Another important topic, balancing forces, will allow students to explore physics concepts by designing and testing structures, such as bridges or towers, to understand how forces interact in everyday life. These topics will be reinforced through hands-on learning, scientific inquiry, and opportunities for students to present their findings through oral presentations, lab reports, and creative projects. By the end of the year, students will not only have a deeper understanding of the world around them but also develop essential scientific skills that will prepare them for future learning.
