Be a Bee Initiative with the Boys & Girls Club

A group of students from the Be a Bee Initiative worked with students at the Boys & Girls Club, Las Margaritas community in Santurce. Working with this project SJS students' goal was to educate children on the importance of bees in their environment and motivate them to become leaders in their communities. Tenth graders, Paola Pimentel, and Félix González held an educational conference with the Boys and Girls Club students and urged them to get involved in the Be & Bee Initiative. To increase awareness among the young group, Abi Boquette led a craft session in which students made their own friendship bracelets with bee charms. Abi continued to work with older students from the program, introducing them to large wooden pots of sunflowers in their own orchard. Boys and Girls Club students learned how to handle the seeds, prepare the soil, and plant them. They were also instructed on how to tend to them daily. It was a growing experience for both Saint John's students and participants from the Boys and Girls Club. It showed how working together with a shared vision can make long-lasting changes in communities.
