Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

Internet and network access is available to students and teachers in Saint John’s School (SJS). The Internet offers vast, diverse and unique educational resources to both students and teachers. Although, families should be aware that some material could be offensive, inaccurate or lacking in educational value, SJS has taken precautions to restrict access to controversial material. We believe that the valuable information and interaction available far outweigh the possibility that users may obtain material inconsistent with the educational goals of the school.

SJS expects students to read and sign the following Acceptable Use Policy with their Parent/Guardian prior to their being allowed to use the Internet at SJS.

I understand that using the SJS network is a privilege and not a right. As a user, I promise to:

• Respect others and not use the computer to harm or harass other people or their work.
• Follow copyright laws. I will not use someone else’s work and present it as my own.
• Let a teacher or adult know if I unintentionally find offensive material.
• Use interactive game sites, e-mail or chat rooms only with the explicit permission of a teacher.
• Use the Internet for research, and guided educational activities. I will not use the school network to access or modify my personal homepage, to subscribe, shop or play games.
• Discuss with my parent/guardian rules for Internet use on my home computer.
• Preserve the operation and display settings of the computer or network as I find them.
• Protect the operation of the network by not installing or downloading software, shareware or freeware.
• Keep my password and user name private, never share with friends.
• Log off after each and every computer session.
• Use the network/access only with a teacher’s permission.

I understand that if I violate any of these rules, I may lose the privilege of using the Internet access at SJS.

Penalty for misuse:

1^st offense – Warning and meeting with teacher.

2^nd offense – Warning and meeting with teacher and principal. Parents notified by phone. A written record placed in student’s file. Consequences determined by school principal.

3^rd offense – Meeting with teacher, principal and parents. Consequences determined by school principal.

I have read and discussed the above with my parents/guardians and, by signing SJS Internet Access AUP: I agree to abide by this policy while using the Internet at SJS.

I have read and discussed the above policy with my child. I recognize that SJS will take precautions to restrict access to controversial material available of the World Wide Web. I will not hold SJS responsible for access by my child of any inappropriate material nor will SJS be held responsible for any damages users or their personal hardware may incur.
